As every aspect of one's job or career is socially related, everything is about business.
Givent that one of the key aspect of business is risk management, we should all learn about it.
For example, a research director has to take calculated risks, by submitting proposals that have good results already. A general should fight wars that he has clear advantage. A business should focus on products that it has an obvious edge over its competitors. A true gambler never plays the odds. Never leave things to chance.

Eating at Sweet-N-Tart inspires me to create hi-tech experience for Chinese restaurants, as this industry is the only florishing avenue for Chinese trying to make a living in the US. (Clothing is no longer a possibility, and other jobs are being outsourced off-shore. Eating is one of the few industries that demand local service.) So ideas and innovations that give an edge to Chinese restaurants, or to inspire a bridging of the two cultures is a social service.
That being said: provide hardware and software to make a dining experience an Amazon experience. With touch-screen interactions, collaborative filtering and community building tools to allow everyone to be a critic (and not just the Daily News guy who doesn't even know the culture.)

From my experiment of selling DVD to coworkers, insights on sales are:
- Service to women and children. Men tend to do it on their own, and so need no service.
- sell to women is much easier: they perceive the need, trust you, appreciate your service, and make the sale. To men (like myself), however, we minimize the cost, no regard to the service. So it is much harder to make the sale. Of course the distinction should not be between the sexes, but in personality. Remember the woman in VA who calculates to the cent for us to sell the bunch of Chinese can food that we provided as a service to her?

research leadership in open source community
While reading the article from
Slashdot | Thermoacoustic Cooler Means Green-Friendly Icecream, I followed to the B&J flash presentation. Listening to the prof talking about their approach to finding an environmentally friendly product, I thought of how often the accredited universities tend to get all the focus and attention, while other chem-hackers out there who could have found similar solutions would probably not get heard easily.
Perhaps I can start a forum where people can discuss hacking solutions to various life-relevant problems, and if the results turn out useful, go market it. Otherwise, we feel like we cannot contribute to any of these relevant and ground-breaking discoveries unless we sign up with a professor.
